How to Measure for a Garage Door
At Premium Garage Doors, we help homeowners, builders, architects, and property managers throughout New Zealand find the right garage door solution for their project. Whether you’re installing a sectional door, roller door, or tilt door, accurate measurements are the first step to ensuring a perfect fit and a smooth installation.
Our team measures and installs hundreds of garage doors every year, and while every property is different, the key measurements remain the same.
Opening Width
Measure the finished opening from side to side.
For the most accurate result, measure at the top, middle, and bottom of the opening and record the smallest measurement.
This determines the overall door width required.
Opening Height
Measure from the finished floor level to the underside of the lintel.
If the floor is uneven, take multiple measurements and record the lowest point.
This determines the overall door height required.
Side Room
Side room is the available space between the edge of the opening and the nearest wall, return wall, shelving, pipework, or obstruction.
This space is required for tracks, brackets, springs, and installation hardware.
At Premium Garage Doors, we assess side room carefully to ensure the chosen door system operates correctly and achieves the best possible finish.
Headroom
Headroom is the space above the garage opening.
Measure from the top of the opening to the nearest obstruction above.
Examples include:
- Roof framing
- Ceiling battens
- Structural beams
- Lighting
- Pipes
- Electrical wiring
- Existing garage door equipment
Headroom is one of the most important measurements when selecting a garage door. Different door systems require different amounts of clearance, and our team will help determine the most suitable option for your garage.
Backroom (Garage Depth)
Backroom is the distance from the inside face of the opening to the rear wall of the garage.
This measurement is especially important for sectional garage doors, as the door tracks and opener extend back into the garage.
Adequate backroom allows for proper operation, improved reliability, and a cleaner installation.
Lintel Construction
The lintel is the structural support located above the garage opening.
If possible, identify whether the lintel is:
- Timber
- Steel
- Concrete
- Masonry
This helps determine the most suitable fixing method and ensures the garage door can be installed safely and securely.
Obstructions
Every garage is different.
When measuring, take note of any potential obstructions, including:
- Water pipes
- Gas lines
- Electrical wiring
- Switchboards
- Storage systems
- Ceiling-mounted equipment
- Existing garage door hardware
Providing photos helps our team identify any installation considerations before work begins.
Choosing the Right Garage Door
At Premium Garage Doors, we supply and install a range of garage door systems to suit different homes, buildings, and applications.
Sectional Garage Doors
Sectional doors are New Zealand’s most popular garage door option and are ideal for modern homes.
They offer excellent weather protection, smooth operation, and a premium appearance while maximising drive-through height.
Roller Doors
Roller doors are a practical and reliable solution for garages, sheds, workshops, and commercial buildings.
Their compact design makes them a popular choice where simplicity and durability are important.
Tilt Doors
Tilt doors operate as a single panel and provide a clean architectural appearance.
They are often selected for custom homes and specialist applications where a one-piece door is preferred.
